Hardwood topographical maps showcasing New Zealand's natural beauty
What is a topographical map?
Topography is the study and description of the physical features of an area, for examples, its hills, mountains, valleys, rivers or lakes. A topographical map is a spatial representation of the topography of a landscape.
Why purchase a topographical map?
Every place holds a tapestry of stories and experiences, which are forever ingrained in memories and emotions with geography.
A topographical map allows you to hold onto a special place in your, or your loved one’s heart. It transports you back to that place and to those memories. Whether those memories be where you first met the love of your life, where you grew up, where you hunted with your mates, where you started a family or where you laid a loved one to rest. Whatever the memory a topographical map allows you to hold onto that place and physical touch it, hold it and breathe it in.
Topographical maps make the perfect gift or memento.
You can also rest assured that when you choose products from Legacy Project Services, we personally oversee the creation of each map, ensuring it captures the essence of cherished memories and becomes a heartfelt symbol of your love and appreciation for the land and those memories.
What we use:
Rimu
The main timber we use is recycled native New Zealand Rimu. Rimu, also known as red pine, is one of New Zealand’s most popular hardwoods. These trees can take up to 700-800 years to get to full size. The tree is sacred to the Māori people as it is believed to help keep away evil spirits. Rimu trees are a protected species with highly regulated milling requirements.
Macrocarpa
Another wood we can is macrocarpa. Macrocarpa is a medium hardwood grown in New Zealand since 1860’s. It is resistant to insect and borer attack. Colours range from yellow to a brown heartwood colour. Macrocarpa releases a fragrant spicy odour. Is a beautiful wood to work with but does sometimes split if stored in hot areas or direct sunlight. Please consider where your carve is going to be placed if selecting the macrocarpa option.
Radiata Pine
Radiata Pine is used for our topographic maps that are to be painted. Using treated machine stress graded products reduce timber shrinkage and splitting. Maps are primed ready for your inner artist to be unleased and transform these pieces into a realistic terrain.
Finishes: Raw, water based white primer.
The colours and grains of each carve are unique with no two carves the same.
Size:
Size of the standard carve is 28cm x 28cm with the height depending on the raw material, but a general average is between 3.5cm to 4.5cm
Sizes can be changed if required.
Finishes:
Finishes provided for a Rimu or Macrocarpa carve are Teak oil, Beeswax, Clear varnish, or Linseed oil.
